After Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Shraddha Kapoor is all set to return to the big screen with her upcoming film Eetha, a biographical drama based on the life of legendary Lavani artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar. While the recently released teaser received praise for Shraddha’s remarkable transformation, the film has now landed in controversy over its title.
According to a report by TV9 Marathi, Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s family and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have objected to the film’s title. They argue that since the movie is based on Vithabai’s life, her name should be included in the title.
Why Has the Title Become Controversial?
Reports suggest that the NCP’s film and cultural department has questioned the filmmakers over naming the biopic Eetha instead of using Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s name.
The family has requested that the film be renamed “Vitha” or “Vithabai”, saying the title should properly honor the legendary folk artist who played a major role in preserving and promoting Maharashtra’s Lavani and Tamasha traditions.
Maharashtra NCP state president Babasaheb Patil reportedly said that protecting Vithabai’s legacy is everyone’s responsibility and that the film’s title should reflect her extraordinary contribution to Maharashtra’s folk culture.
Family Appeals to the Makers
Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s sons Kailash and Rajesh, along with her grandson Mohit, have also urged the filmmakers to reconsider the title.
According to the family, the name Eetha does not truly represent Vithabai’s identity or acknowledge her lifelong contribution. They believe that a biopic should carry the name of the person whose life story it portrays.
As of now, director Laxman Utekar, Shraddha Kapoor, and Maddock Films have not issued any official response regarding the demand to change the title.
Who Was Vithabai Narayangaonkar?
Vithabai Narayangaonkar was one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated Lavani and Tamasha performers. She played a significant role in preserving and popularizing Indian folk art and was honored by the President of India on several occasions for her outstanding contribution.
Despite achieving widespread recognition during her career, she reportedly faced financial hardships in the final years of her life.
What Does Eetha Show?
The teaser opens with a Lavani performance before showing Shraddha Kapoor’s character enduring labor pain while pregnant. Despite her condition, she steps onto the stage to perform, showcasing the courage, dedication, and passion that defined Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s life.
Following the success of Stree, Shraddha Kapoor reunites with Maddock Films for Eetha. The film also stars Randeep Hooda and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub in key roles.
Eetha is scheduled to release in theatres on August 28, 2026.
