Meta has rolled out a mandatory software update for its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to enhance user privacy and prevent unauthorized camera usage. The update comes at a time when several reports suggest the company is developing next-generation AI-powered smart glasses capable of continuously understanding the wearer’s surroundings.
Camera Will Stop Working if the Privacy LED Is Tampered With
As part of the latest update, Meta has strengthened the security of the glasses’ built-in LED privacy indicator. The LED lights up whenever the camera captures photos or records videos, notifying people nearby that recording is in progress.
Earlier reports claimed that some users had discovered ways to disable or tamper with the LED, allowing the glasses to record without displaying the visual indicator.
To address the issue, Meta has introduced a new security feature that automatically disables the camera if the system detects that the privacy LED has been damaged, removed, or modified. The camera will remain inactive until the indicator is restored and functioning properly.
Meta Also Working on Next-Generation AI Smart Glasses
Alongside the privacy update, reports indicate that Meta is testing a new generation of smart glasses powered by an experimental AI technology called “Super Sensing.”
Instead of recording video continuously, these glasses are expected to periodically capture images and ambient audio throughout the day. This information would enable Meta AI to better understand the user’s surroundings and deliver more accurate, context-aware assistance.
The technology could also allow users to ask questions about places, objects, or events the glasses have previously observed.
Always-On Sensing Could Raise New Privacy Concerns
According to reports, Meta is also considering keeping the LED privacy indicator turned off while the “Super Sensing” feature is active.
If this approach is adopted, people nearby may not realize that the smart glasses are collecting visual or audio information, even if they are not recording traditional video.
Reports further suggest that Meta believes a continuously illuminated LED could eventually lose its effectiveness, as people may become accustomed to seeing it. The company has previously argued that constant visual alerts might reduce awareness of the moments when photos or videos are actually being saved.
Feature Designed to Make AI More Intelligent
The primary purpose of the “Super Sensing” technology is not continuous recording but to make the AI assistant smarter and more useful.
The feature could help users locate misplaced belongings, remember activities from earlier in the day, recognize previously seen objects, and answer questions using information collected throughout the day.
Reports also suggest that some of these AI capabilities may eventually be introduced to existing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses through future software updates.
