Microsoft is reportedly preparing to launch its next-generation Maia 300 AI chip soon. According to a report from The Information, the company could unveil the new AI chip as early as September. The report cites people familiar with Microsoft’s plans.

Microsoft entered the custom AI chip market in November 2023 with the introduction of its first Maia AI accelerator. However, the company has been slower than rivals such as Google and Amazon in scaling up its in-house AI chip development. Microsoft is primarily looking to reduce its dependence on expensive Nvidia processors.

Meanwhile, Google has started recognizing revenue from direct sales of its custom AI processors, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), beginning with the quarter that ended in June. Amazon, on the other hand, is also seeing growing demand for its internally developed AI processors, including its Trainium chips.

According to the report, Microsoft is in talks with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for its Maia 300 chips. The company reportedly wants to secure production capacity for more than 300,000 chips for delivery in 2027. Microsoft is also working on significantly increasing Maia 300 production and encouraging major cloud companies, including Anthropic, to adopt its custom AI processors.

Andrew Wall, general manager of Microsoft’s Azure Maia business, said the company continues to invest in custom silicon as part of its long-term AI infrastructure strategy. He also clarified that Microsoft does not publicly disclose production figures and that the numbers cited in the report do not represent the full scale of the company’s program.

At the time of the report, TSMC had not provided an official response to the claims.

Microsoft’s long-term goal is reportedly to secure manufacturing capacity for more than 1 million Maia 300 chips. However, component availability and ongoing discussions with TSMC over manufacturing capacity could affect the company’s ambitious plans.

The development of the Maia 300 comes after Microsoft’s recent Maia 200 AI chip. The company introduced its second-generation Maia 200 in January. The chip is manufactured by TSMC using 3nm process technology.

Microsoft designed the Maia 200 with a large amount of SRAM memory. SRAM is a high-speed memory technology that can help improve the performance of AI systems handling a large number of user requests simultaneously.

As demand for AI computing continues to grow, Microsoft is increasingly focusing on developing its own AI accelerators. This strategy could be important for the company as it looks to diversify its chip supply chain and reduce its reliance on external hardware providers such as Nvidia.

If Microsoft succeeds in scaling up Maia 300 production, the chip could mark an important step in the company’s AI infrastructure expansion and broader custom silicon strategy.
