Legendary actor Dharmendra, who passed away in November 2025 at the age of 89, left behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions. In a recent interview, actress and politician Hema Malini opened up about the one wish that remained closest to his heart throughout his life. She revealed that Dharmendra always wanted the entire family to stay united and believed that relationships should always come before anything else.
Dharmendra Always Stressed the Importance of Family
Speaking to Hindi Rush, Hema Malini recalled that Dharmendra frequently encouraged her to spend more time with the family.
She said, “He always told me to stay close to the children and the family. He believed work would never stop, but family should never be neglected. These days, people become so occupied with their own lives that families often drift apart. That’s why he always felt staying united was extremely important.”
Hema Malini married Dharmendra in 1980, and the couple has two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. Before marrying Hema, Dharmendra was married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children—Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Ajeeta Deol, and Vijayta Deol. Dharmendra continued to live with Prakash Kaur until his final days, while Hema Malini lived in a nearby residence.
His Message Never Changed
When asked about Dharmendra’s final message to the family, Hema said his beliefs remained the same until the very end.
“He always told us to stay connected as a family, stand by one another, and give relationships the highest priority. Work can always continue, but nothing is more important than family,” she shared.

Hema also addressed the speculation surrounding the Deol family’s relationships, making it clear that there is no division within the family.
She described Sunny and Bobby as kind-hearted and affectionate, adding that they have always treated her with warmth and respect. According to Hema, although the family does not publicize their personal relationships, they remain closely connected behind the scenes.
“We don’t make our personal life public, but we are all together and we are a happy family,” she said.
Dharmendra’s Simplicity Won Hearts
Remembering Dharmendra, Hema Malini said it is difficult to put his personality into words.
She recalled that despite achieving tremendous success, he remained humble and grounded throughout his life. Whenever he noticed any activity outside the house, he would immediately want to know what was happening. If a fan came to meet him, he would warmly invite them inside, spend time with them, and make them feel welcome.
Hema also spoke about his love for poetry, saying he enjoyed writing and sharing his verses with admirers. Looking back on their years together, she described him as a generous, compassionate, and optimistic person who always encouraged others to face life’s challenges with courage.
She called him a devoted father and a loving grandfather, adding that his grandchildren continue to miss him deeply.
Separate Prayer Meetings After His Passing
Following Dharmendra’s demise, the Deol family organized a memorial service in Mumbai. However, Hema Malini and her daughters did not attend the gathering and instead held a separate prayer meeting at their own residence on the same day. A few days later, another memorial service was organized in Delhi, where several political leaders and dignitaries paid tribute to the veteran actor.

In April 2026, Bobby Deol accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the SCREEN Awards on behalf of his late father.
Overcome with emotion while receiving the honor, Bobby said he could still see the immense love people had for Dharmendra. He reflected on how his father touched millions not only through his iconic films but also through the Instagram reels he enjoyed creating during the later years of his life.
Bobby also shared that Dharmendra always encouraged people to stay positive and believe in themselves. He believed that every individual possesses a unique talent, and with self-confidence and determination, anyone can achieve great success.
