India’s star men’s doubles badminton pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, have withdrawn from the Indonesia Open 2026 due to a shoulder injury suffered by Rankireddy. The recurring issue resurfaced during their opening-round match in Jakarta, forcing the Indian duo to cut short their campaign and retire from the tournament.

The development comes as a major disappointment for Indian badminton fans, especially after Satwik and Chirag recently ended a nearly two-year title drought by winning the prestigious Singapore Open.

Campaign Ends in the Opening Round

The world No. 4 Indian pair was taking on Malaysia’s Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing in the first round when Rankireddy began experiencing pain in his right shoulder. The discomfort affected his movement and overall performance on the court.

With the Indian duo trailing 6-11 in the opening game, they decided to retire from the match, bringing their Indonesia Open journey to an abrupt end.

Reports suggest that Rankireddy has been dealing with the shoulder problem for some time. The same injury had also forced the pair to withdraw from the Badminton Asia Championships earlier this year.

Recovery Becomes the Top Priority

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) confirmed the withdrawal and stated that the primary focus will now be on Rankireddy’s recovery and rehabilitation. The aim is to ensure that he regains full fitness ahead of the upcoming international tournaments.

The association also expressed confidence that India’s leading men’s doubles pair will return to competitive action soon.

Setback for India’s Medal Hopes

The Indonesia Open is regarded as one of the most prestigious events on the BWF World Tour, making Satwik and Chirag’s withdrawal a significant blow to India’s medal prospects in the men’s doubles category.

Over the years, the duo has established itself as one of India’s most successful badminton partnerships, consistently delivering strong performances on the international stage.

What Lies Ahead?

Although their Indonesia Open campaign ended earlier than expected, Indian badminton fans will now be hoping for a speedy recovery for Rankireddy. If the injury is not serious, the pair could make a quick return to competition and continue their impressive run this season.

Following their recent Singapore Open triumph and consistent performances throughout the year, Satwik and Chirag remain among India’s strongest contenders in upcoming major badminton tournaments.
