India’s Sharmila Dhankar created history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning the women’s shot put F57 event with a season-best throw of 9.81m, securing the gold medal. With this remarkable achievement, she became the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in para athletics. Her victory also ended India’s two-decade-long wait for a para athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games.
In athletics, Sarvesh Kushare also delivered an impressive performance, winning the silver medal in the men’s high jump. Kushare cleared 2.25m, but three unsuccessful attempts at 2.28m left him with second place. Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford claimed the gold medal in the event.
India’s weightlifting team also enjoyed a successful outing, with Valluri Ajaya Babu and Gyaneshwari Yadav both winning silver medals in their respective categories. Competing in the men’s 79kg division, Ajaya Babu narrowly missed out on gold, finishing just 1kg behind Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry Hidayat. Meanwhile, Gyaneshwari Yadav, making her Commonwealth Games debut, secured silver in the women’s 53kg category to add another medal to India’s tally.
In another dramatic development, Shilpa Shyla was awarded the bronze medal in the women’s shot put F57 event following a successful post-event protest and review. Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi had her valid throw disqualified, promoting Shilpa to third place.
Thanks to these outstanding performances, India’s medal tally at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has risen to 10, including 2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Indian boxing star Lovlina Borgohain has already guaranteed herself at least a medal after receiving a quarter-final bye in the women’s 75kg category.
