Google has unveiled its new Google Home Speaker as part of its broader push to bring Gemini AI across its ecosystem. Launched on June 17, the device is the company’s first standalone smart speaker in nearly six years and the first audio product powered by Gemini AI technology.

Priced at $99.99 (approximately Rs 9,421), the smart speaker is being positioned as Google’s biggest smart home upgrade since the launch of Nest Audio. According to the company, the device goes beyond basic music playback and smart home controls, functioning as an advanced AI assistant capable of understanding natural language and handling more complex requests.

The launch aligns with Google’s strategy of integrating Gemini AI into a wide range of products and services. The company has already introduced Gemini across smartphones, Search, and productivity tools, and is now extending those capabilities to smart home devices.

Compared to traditional smart speakers, the new Google Home Speaker offers a more intuitive user experience. Users can issue multiple commands in a single sentence, such as controlling lights in different rooms, starting music playback, and setting timers simultaneously.

Gemini AI can also understand corrections made during a conversation. If a user changes a command immediately after speaking it, the system can recognize the update and carry out the revised instruction without requiring the interaction to start over.

The device features a “Continued Conversation” mode, which keeps the microphone active for a short period after responding. This allows users to ask follow-up questions without repeatedly saying the “Hey Google” wake phrase.

To make interactions feel more natural, Google has introduced 10 new AI-generated voices. Beyond smart home controls, Gemini can answer questions, provide information on a wide range of topics, and engage in more detailed conversations similar to those available through the Gemini mobile app.

In terms of design, the speaker retains Google’s familiar rounded shape and 3D-knit fabric finish. However, it now includes a redesigned LED light ring at the base that visually indicates when the device is listening, processing requests, or responding. The speaker will be available globally in Hazel and Porcelain color options, while customers in the United States will also have access to Jade and Berry variants.

Google is also introducing a new subscription service called Google Home Premium. The service is priced at $10 (around Rs 943) per month or $100 (approximately Rs 9,431) per year.

Premium subscribers will gain access to advanced AI capabilities, including Gemini Live Conversations, which enable longer and more interactive discussions. Additional features include AI-powered Nest camera analysis, activity summaries, and enhanced home monitoring insights.

To encourage adoption, Google is offering six months of Google Home Premium at no additional cost with the purchase of the device. After the promotional period ends, users will need to pay the subscription fee to continue accessing premium features.

Google believes the new Gemini-powered Home Speaker can transform smart speakers from simple voice-controlled gadgets into intelligent AI companions capable of playing a much larger role in everyday life.
