Microsoft has announced the launch of a new business unit dedicated to helping large enterprises build and deploy custom AI solutions tailored to their specific business needs. The initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its enterprise AI services and make artificial intelligence more practical and valuable for business customers.

The new division, called Microsoft Frontier Co, will employ more than 6,000 professionals, including engineering experts. Microsoft is investing $2.5 billion in the project. The team will leverage Microsoft’s existing AI technologies to help organizations develop, integrate, and scale AI-powered solutions designed for their unique operational requirements.

A Major Boost to Microsoft’s Enterprise AI Strategy

Over the past few months, several leading technology companies have introduced AI services based on the Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDEs) model. Under this approach, engineers work directly with enterprise customers to build and implement AI systems tailored to their specific business challenges.

Microsoft is expected to have a significant advantage in this space due to its extensive enterprise customer base. The company has already deployed AI engineering teams through partnerships with organizations such as the London Stock Exchange Group, Unilever, Land O’Lakes, Accenture, and several other Fortune 500 companies.

According to Judson Althoff, Microsoft’s Commercial Business CEO, Microsoft Frontier Co goes beyond the traditional Forward-Deployed Engineering model. He said the new organization is designed to become the industry’s largest, most capable, and results-driven AI engineering platform.

Competition in Enterprise AI Continues to Grow

Microsoft’s announcement comes at a time when competition in the enterprise AI market is intensifying.

Earlier, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a $1 billion investment to expand its own AI deployment business based on the Forward-Deployed Engineer model.

Meanwhile, AI leaders OpenAI and Anthropic are also developing similar enterprise-focused AI services. Unlike Microsoft’s initiative, some of these projects are reportedly supported by external funding from private equity firms.

With the launch of Microsoft Frontier Co, Microsoft aims to further strengthen its position in the enterprise AI market. The new unit will provide businesses with dedicated engineering expertise and customized AI solutions, enabling organizations to adopt AI technologies more efficiently and accelerate their digital transformation.
