Mercedes-Benz is rapidly expanding its presence in the Indian market, with plans to launch 12 new models in 2026 alone. A key part of this expansion strategy is the AMG GLC 53 Coupe, which is expected to arrive in India in early 2027. It will replace the AMG GLC 43, a model that attracted around 140 buyers last year.
Design & Engineering: A Coupe-SUV for Buyers With Distinct Taste
Coupe-SUVs have never been mainstream choices. Their appeal lies in combining the practicality of an SUV with a more stylish, emotional, and eye-catching design. Mercedes has designed this model specifically for buyers looking for something more unique and sportier than conventional SUVs.
However, the biggest change isn’t in the styling but in its performance and character. The GLC 53 arrives with a much stronger powertrain and a more engaging personality, moving away from one of AMG’s most criticized decisions — the ordinary 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.
Performance & Refinement: Six Cylinders Change Everything
Under the hood sits exactly what AMG enthusiasts had been waiting for — a proper six-cylinder engine.
The new AMG GLC 53 features Mercedes-AMG’s updated 3.0-litre inline-six M256 EVO engine paired with mild-hybrid technology. It delivers 449hp, but numbers alone don’t tell the full story. Its real strength lies in the smoothness, depth, and emotional driving experience that only a straight-six engine can provide.
Driving it around Hamburg immediately highlights its responsiveness. Despite weighing nearly two tonnes, the SUV feels agile, eager, and always ready to perform. AMG has equipped it with a larger electric turbocharger, revised intake and exhaust systems, and an upgraded intercooler setup — all of which are clearly noticeable from behind the wheel. Throttle response feels sharp, precise, and exceptionally smooth.
Then comes the soundtrack.
Strict emissions regulations have made it increasingly difficult to create truly exciting performance cars, especially in Europe. Yet AMG has successfully preserved the emotional appeal of this vehicle. In Sport and Sport+ modes, the GLC 53 comes alive with a deep exhaust note accompanied by satisfying crackles and pops, bringing back the classic AMG experience.
Even short bursts of acceleration feel thrilling.
Previous four-cylinder AMG models were technically impressive but lacked emotional depth. This new straight-six restores the missing personality buyers expect from an AMG.
Ride & Handling: Impressive Control, But India Could Be a Challenge
At higher speeds, the rest of the package starts showing its strengths.
Rear-wheel steering gives the GLC 53 remarkable agility for an SUV of its size. The steering feels sharp and highly responsive, while the all-wheel-drive system provides excellent confidence. Buyers also get an electronic rear differential and even a Drift Mode through the Dynamic Plus Package.
Yes — Drift Mode in a midsize luxury SUV.
Mercedes clearly wanted its latest 53-series models to feel more playful and emotional, and the company appears to have succeeded. The GLC 53 feels more engaging and exciting than many modern performance SUVs.
Ride quality, however, could be a concern.
Even on Germany’s smooth roads, the suspension feels slightly firm. At lower speeds, small imperfections and road joints are noticeable inside the cabin. Given Indian road conditions — potholes, uneven surfaces, and rough patches — the combination of large wheels and low-profile tyres could make everyday driving feel less comfortable.
Mercedes may need India-specific suspension tuning to better suit local conditions.
Interior: A Balance Between Sportiness and Daily Usability
Inside, the GLC 53 Coupe offers a good blend of luxury and sportiness. The seats are comfortable, the driving position feels excellent, and the chunky AMG steering wheel enhances the sporty experience.
The vehicle misses out on Mercedes’ latest MB.OS software platform, though for an SUV focused on driving pleasure, that may not be a major drawback. However, the swipe-sensitive steering controls remain — a feature many users still dislike.
Despite the coupe roofline, rear-seat space is better than expected. Headroom and legroom remain acceptable, although the cabin layout clearly prioritizes the driver’s experience. Rear passengers may not enjoy spirited driving quite as much.
Expected Price & Verdict
Overall, the AMG GLC 53 Coupe feels like a very well-balanced package.
It delivers strong performance without feeling intimidating. It remains practical and, most importantly, has genuine personality. This six-cylinder formula seems particularly well suited for India because it strikes an ideal balance between excitement and everyday usability.
Mercedes is expected to bring the GLC 53 to India as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) model, potentially lowering import duties. However, a weakening rupee and rising import costs could reduce some of those advantages.
Its expected price could be around ₹1.3 crore.
Even if it ends up costing slightly more than its predecessor, its appeal is unlikely to diminish. At a time when the automotive industry is rapidly shifting toward electrification, that glorious straight-six engine may ultimately become its biggest identity and strongest selling point.
