Nissan is all set to launch its new midsize SUV, the Tekton, on 9 July 2026. While the SUV shares its platform with the new Renault Duster, it will not receive the strong-hybrid powertrain that Renault plans to introduce in the Duster. According to reports, Renault intends to keep this advanced hybrid technology exclusive to the Duster, giving it a stronger position in the highly competitive midsize SUV segment.
Instead, the Nissan Tekton will be offered with 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine options. Meanwhile, Renault is expected to launch the Duster’s 1.8-litre strong-hybrid variant during the festive season this year, promising improved fuel efficiency and a smoother driving experience, especially in city conditions.
Renault to Keep Hybrid Technology Exclusive to the Duster
The move reflects the evolving strategy of the Renault-Nissan Alliance in India. After Renault acquired Nissan’s stake in their Indian manufacturing joint venture, the French automaker took greater control of local product development, engineering, and manufacturing operations.
Both the new Duster and Tekton are built on the CMF-B-based RGMP platform. While the two SUVs will continue to share several components and the same architecture, reports suggest Renault plans to reserve advanced technologies—particularly hybrid powertrains—for its own models. This strategy is expected to strengthen the Duster’s premium positioning in the market.
Despite this differentiation, the partnership between Renault and Nissan remains intact. Both companies will continue to share manufacturing facilities, platforms, and components to optimize production costs.
Horse Powertrain to Supply the Duster’s Hybrid System
The Duster’s strong-hybrid powertrain will be supplied by Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault, Geely, and Aramco. The company is also expected to localize production of the hybrid system in India, with Renault serving as its primary customer. This aligns with Renault’s long-term strategy of expanding electrified vehicle offerings in the Indian market.
Tekton to Focus on Affordability and Rugged Design
Even without a hybrid option, Nissan is expected to position the Tekton as a more affordable alternative to the Duster. The strategy mirrors how the Magnite was priced more competitively than the Kiger, and Nissan is likely to adopt a similar approach with the Tekton. The company is also expected to offer multiple variants powered by its turbo-petrol engines to attract a wider range of buyers.
In terms of design, the Tekton is reportedly inspired by the flagship Nissan Patrol, giving it a more upright, boxy, and rugged appearance than the Duster. Combined with Nissan’s reputation for reliability and solid build quality, the Tekton could appeal to buyers looking for a tough midsize SUV, even without the availability of a hybrid powertrain.
